Our Story Through the Years
More than seven decades after its story began, Thompson Family Clinic remains grounded in the same principle that guided Bud Thompson, Dr. Jerry Like, Dr. Tom, and now Dr. Will: knowing your patients, listening to them, caring for them, and being there when they need you.
1939
A Beginning in Business
William C. “Bud” Thompson graduates from Indiana University with a degree in business. His career path would soon take an unexpected turn.
1943
A Calling to Medicine
During World War II, Bud Thompson enters the United States Army and serves as a medic. His experience caring for wounded soldiers would inspire him to pursue medicine after the war.
1944-1946
Serving Overseas
By the spring of 1944, Bud is stationed in England preparing for the Allied invasion of Europe. Following D-Day, he serves in France, Germany, and Poland, caring for wounded soldiers in field hospitals before leaving the Army in March 1946.
1950s
A Family Practice Takes Root
After returning home and pursuing medical training, Dr. Bud becomes a family physician and begins caring for patients in the rural community. His practice reflects the medicine of the time, including house calls throughout the countryside and care that extended well beyond the walls of an office.
1960s
A Legacy Interrupted
Bud’s medical career ends tragically when he dies at age 48 after returning home from a late-night rural house call. His passing leaves both his family and his patients facing an uncertain future.
1960s–1980
Dr. Jerry Like Keeps the
Doors Open
Bud’s nephew and first cousin to Dr. Tom, Dr. Jerry Like, steps in to care for Bud’s patients while maintaining his own medical practice about 30 miles away. He returns every Thursday and Saturday for years, keeping the office open and preserving the possibility that the practice could one day continue into another generation.
1976-1980
The Next Generation Prepares
William C. “Tom” Thompson II graduates from Indiana University in 1976 and Midwestern University’s osteopathic medical school in 1980. He completes a two-year family practice residency program in Chicago.
1980s
Dr. Tom Returns Home
After completing his medical training, Dr. Tom returns to practice medicine and begins the next chapter of Thompson Family Clinic. Dr. Like is finally able to concentrate fully on his own practice after keeping the Monroe City office going for years.
Following Decades
Building the Practice Together
Dr. Tom and his wife, Teri, build and sustain Thompson Family Clinic together. Teri’s background in marketing and business becomes an important part of growing the practice, while employees and generations of patients become part of the clinic’s extended family.
2013-2021
The Third Generation
Enters Medicine
Dr. Tom and Teri’s son, Will, chooses medicine and eventually joins Thompson Family Clinic. He graduates from Indiana University in 2013, completes West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in 2018, and finishes a three-year Family Medicine Residency in 2021.
Today
Continuing the Legacy
Dr. Will Thompson carries the family tradition into another generation while bringing new capabilities to Thompson Family Clinic, including colonoscopy and EGD procedures and more advanced dermatologic procedures. The practice continues to evolve with medicine and technology while preserving its commitment to personal, continuing relationships with patients.
